What's New

In 2006, we were blessed with two new crias...one male, Storm Dancer, and one little wee female, April's Athena.

Storm Dancer weighed in at 16 pounds 4 ounces. on October 29, 2006, at 2:30 pm in the afternoon. Last year, his mom, Sunny Delight, lost a cria, a little female, who got stuck in the birth canal. As you can imagine, we were extremely fearful that this would or could happen again, even though the vet assured us that it was just a freak of nature the first time.

As soon as he was born, he popped up like a” jack in the box”. He was all wet, as it had been a rainy, cold day. He was so dark that at first we thought he was jet black. He had massive locks of curls all over his body and took to nursing without any coaching.

At 43 pounds and three months old, Storm loves to chase the ladies. Big or small, he does not seem to mind the challenge. He is also very protective of the ladies when the males are brought in to breed. He even at times bumps into and spits at them. He is a handsome, dark-faced, long-legged bay black, we think, with long dark eye lashes. He is as gentle as the rain that fell on his day of birth.

April's Athena weighed in at 10.2 pounds on November 6, 2006, at 5:30 pm. She indeed was a little itty bitty thing. So much for the thought. Alpacas give birth only in the morning hours until noon. Her mom, April, our first purchase, is small at 82 pounds, her normal weight without being pregnant. April gained 12.5 pounds, of which Athena took 10.2 of it. Today, Athena, at 2.5 months, weighs 23.6 pounds.

Athena is very sweet and also extremely gentle. She has big beautiful “doe-like eyes” with lashes that just don’t quit. She has learned the art of “spitting” at Storm, when he does not take “no” for an answer. Athena seems to be “attached at the hip” with mom, while Storm is truly a free spirit. Athena also loves our two Antolian/Pyr livestock dogs. She enjoys what seems to be a “tag chasing” game with them. It is not unusual to find Athena tucked in between the dogs and her mom April in the barn.
